Formerly of early '00s dance-pop favorites Moloko and creator of some of that decade's most adventurous solo electronic music albums, the unmistakable Rosin Murphy returns with her new album Hairless Toys on May 12th. For once the clichés of 'eager anticipation' and 'welcome return' are not misplaced.
Róisín Murphy casts a spell with this beautiful and lush album. The songs unfold slowly and gracefully over fantastic production with wonderful lyrics. Both acoustic and electronic sounds blend together beautifully throughout the eight tracks.Overpowered was a great album, but this is just a whole new level! I would definitely recommend listening on a good pair of headphones as well, since the songs have so much texture and wonderful little layers, with a nice pair of headphones you truly get immersed in this world she's created. I feel like each of these songs were made with so much love and care. To me, this her "Vespertine" record, more introverted and introspective, though there are definitely moments of excitement and fun like the epic "Evil Eyes".There are certain artists that when you listen to their albums for the first time it is a magical experience, and this was certainly the case for me with "Hairless Toys". A few times the songs were so unexpected, original and beautiful, that my jaw dropped. Very few artists have this affect on me. Kate Bush is one of the other few that can really bring me to this level of excitement when listening to a really well made album. My only criticism is that the album version of "Exploitation" goes on for far too long. There's a new intro that was missing on the radio version that's really great! Love the intro, but the outro drags the song out and doesn't add anything to it in my opinion. But that's a very small stumble on such a fantastic set of songs.I think this will definitely be my top album of 2015! Welcome back Róisín!
