Product Description

Psychological trauma and aberrant sexuality abound in this twisted 1972 tale of a young woman whose severe daddy issues send her on an unforgettably bleak downward spiral.Yearning for the love of her absentee father, Jamie inhabits an infantilised world surrounded by toys, including those which her wayward pops bizarrely continues to send her. Unable to consummate her new marriage with dashing colleague Charlie, Jamie s chance encounter with aging sex worker Pearl leads her into the murky world of prostitution where her most disturbing erotic fantasies begin to play out.Grim, quirky and strangely affecting in equal measure, Stanley H. Brasloff s Toys Are Not for Children is a truly one-of-a-kind effort from the heyday of the American exploitation independents, which builds to a haunting and devastating climax that lingers long after the credits roll.SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTSBrand new 2K restoration from original film elementsHigh Definition Blu-rayTM (1080p) presentationOriginal uncompressed mono audioOptional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingBrand new audio commentary with Kat Ellinger and Heather DrainNewly-filmed appreciation by Nightmare USA author Stephen Thrower Dirty Dolls: Femininity, Perversion and Play - a brand new video essay by Alexandra Heller-NicholasOriginal theme song Lonely Am I , newly transferred from the original 45-RPM vinyl singleOriginal TrailerReversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by The Twins of EvilFIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Vanity Celis

Thank you Arrow! This release is a bona-fide event. With the recent release of Hitch Hike to Hell, Arrow is on a roll. I hope they continue with titles such as this. The American Horror Project boxed sets are a start. I hope they can get the rights to The Headless Eye, The Black Room, AXE, The Kidnapped Coed and other visionary, low budget cinematic weirdness. One of the most elusive exploitation movies, ever. Bootlegged for decades, though Something Weird released it on an awful double feature DVD awhile back - it went for a good chunk of change, of course.I saw this theatrically in 2008 - an ancient print - the projectionist had to stop film at least a half dozen times to some on-the-fly repairs. This Arrow 2k scan is beyond any expectations. Garishly eye-popping colors and astonishing attention to detail. Sound mix is fantastic. Optional English subtitles as well.Truly strange and hypnotic. The viewer will be completely enthralled. Probably the ultimate example of a movie conceived and executed as exploitation, yet, somehow achieving True Art. Not unlike, say, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, which was intended as a "B" programmer/ money maker(!)Truly dark and evocative - it'll definitely leave it's footprint on your psyche, whether you like the film or not. This movie (cast, crew, distro) was always shrouded in mystery - hopefully the always dependable Kat Ellinger (On the commentary track) can shed some light this one. (By this I mean the people who were involved with the actual production/making of film - Harry Novak didn't acquire distro for about five years after movie was made.)Update: there's a great feature, an interview with Stephen Thrower (author of the invaluable Nightmare U.S.A.) with TONS of info about the this film: the director's career (he previously made a 60s roughie titled A Madman For Two), the production itself and really interesting biographical facts about the cast and crew:Marcia Forbes married the then president of Cannon Films(!) and promptly retired; another lead (the hapless hubby) went on to become a David "I Drink Your Blood" Durston stock player, appearing in all three of his ("legit") films - presumably he bowed out of Durston's infamous gay roughies- X rated fare. He later popped up in films such as Taxi Driver and The Dogs of War. Anyway, the bonus Stephen Thrower extra is terrific - press kits, stills and footage from many films are utilized; a 40 minute documentary. Again, packed with trivia and insightful commentary. The commentary track by Kat Ellinger is superb as well.Looks and sounds amazing. A great release from Arrow.Sidebar/digression:This is the white whale of infantile horror - if someone would just release (another white whale)PSYCHOPATH (U.S., early/mid 70s), about "Mr. Robbie", the creepiest kiddie TV host (bowl haircut and all) in filmdom, who kills abusive parents, thus saving/avenging the luckless offspring...but I digress. But it'd be a great double feature...Oh, Joe Spinell almost made a sequel before his untimely death. The unholy Trinity of infantile horror: The Baby, Psychopath and Toys Are Not For Children. Would be a great triple bill....A man can dream, right? Right!
